Autumn is possibly the best time to visit Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park. The brilliant reds and golds of various deciduous trees reach their peak colour intensity at this time. Even the coniferous Tamarack adds its amber needles to the grand display. The beautiful backdrop of warm-tones combines with inspiring parkland scenics. With its uninterrupted forests, pristine lakes and serene bogs, the park offers unlimited photographic compositions.
Each day will have us in a natural setting taking advantage of the vibrant colours, rich vegetation, lively wilderness and attractive photographic subject matter. While searching for ideal photography situations, your instructor will guide you through technical and artistic applications unique to nature and wildlife photography.
Besides the showy fall foliage and infinite vistas, we expect ample opportunity to observe (and hopefully photograph) the native wildlife. Moose, Beaver, Racoon, White-tailed Deer, Porcupine and Red Fox are usually found. Occasionally we encounter Mink, Pine Marten, Black Bear, River Otter or Fisher.
While bird migration will have passed its peak, we should still see many species of great interest. This is the home of the Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Common Raven and Spruce Grouse. Sometimes these birds are very tame and easily approached. Common Loons will still be present. Barred Owls and Saw-whet Owls may call at night and other northern species will be there to surprise us.
A sizeable Wolf population exists here. And, at night, we will attempt to make voice contact by imitating their howling. Their haunting response is often one of the most memorable highlights of the week. We will also attempt to attract owls in the same manner. On at least two evenings, we will drive through the park looking specifically for elusive wildlife.
On two other evenings, we will enjoy entertaining, and informative, presentations on nature & wildlife photography. The first deals with camera technique and the second concerns artistic composition.
Breakfast & dinner will be in restaurants. We will enjoy picnic-style lunches in the park.
We intend to hike parts of the park's excellent trail network. However, we will do so at a slow pace and never for long distances. There will be options for the independent photographers to venture on their own.
Most of our time will be in the Algonquin Park area, but a special visit may be made to nearby Arrowhead Provincial Park, strikingly different.
Accommodation will be in a waterfront lodge on Spring Lake.
